Fractional Lasers

Fractional laser resurfacing (aka fractional photothermolysis) works a lot like the pixels in your digital photos, treating your skin in highly targeted tiny DOTs that keep the surrounding skin from harm.

This means you recover faster than with skin resurfacing methods that treat the entire surface of the skin. Those old methods left people literally “red in the face” for a long time.

At RRA, we use the advanced SmartXide DOT CO2 laser system – a safer alternative for skin resurfacing. Based on what you need, we can alter the spacing of the DOTs and the depth of the laser to customize your treatment.

What can Fractional Skin Resurfacing do for me?

Fractional Skin Resurfacing can:

Smooth the texture of your skin.

  • Minimize and smooth scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks.
  • Even out skin tone, improving discoloration, hyperpigmentation, brown spots, dark spots, liver spots, age spots, and melasma.
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Improve sun damage.
  • Minimize enlarged pores.
  • Tighten slightly loosened or lax skin.
  • Stimulate your body’s production of new collagen for a gradual improvement over time.

The DOT laser works on other parts of the body besides the face, too. Many women use it to fade age spots on the chest, for example.

 Does Fractional Skin Resurfacing hurt?

The actual procedure takes 30 minutes and hurts less than older skin resurfacing techniques. That said, yes, pretty hurts. That’s why you will come in early for numbing medications and prescription anti-inflammatories, as well as anti-anxiety meds, if you need them. You will also need to bring someone with you to drive you home because the medications will make it unsafe for you to drive for the rest of the day.

We do everything possible to make you comfortable and speed your post-procedure healing process.

How many resurfacing treatments will I need?

Depending on the specifics of what you want to improve, we recommend that most people get 1-2 laser treatments every few years. After that, you can expect the results to last as long as 2 years depending on the settings used.

 What is recovery like?

Recovery from Fractional Laser is much faster than traditional laser resurfacing. Most people recover within 5-9 days depending on how aggressive your treatment needs to be, and you will probably want to take those few days off from work.

You can expect your skin to be pink or red for a few days to a week, and there is usually some swelling that lasts for 1-3 days. During days 3-5, you may notice some bronzing or darkening of the lasered areas. There may also be some mild flaking of the skin that could go on for a couple of weeks.

For the first 5 days, we’ll ask you to wear ointment on your face. This aids in healing but also makes it difficult to wear makeup.

We’ll tell you everything you need to know to take care of your skin before and after your procedure.

Is the SmartXide DOT laser system safe?

Yes, the DOT laser is one of the safest skin resurfacing methods on the market. It treats only the skin you need to treat and leaves the rest intact while doing wonders for your skin.
